Children’s Museum Of Richmond Showcases New Short Pump Location
March 8, 2010 - 12:11 pm
By Trevor Dickerson

The Children’s Museum of Richmond unveiled plans and renderings of its new Short Pump location on Monday, scheduled to open in June. The organization has leased 15,500 square feet of space at 2200 Old Brick Road in West Broad Village, across from Whole Foods Market to expand their offerings to Far West End children and families.
The space had already been built out for Books-A-Million, who reversed their decision to open a store in the new mixed use development last year.

Children’s Museum of Richmond President and CEO Karen Coltrane and other staff were on hand Monday at the future location to share plans and renderings of what the space will look like when open, plus explain their thoughts for opening a second location in Short Pump.

“We felt like [Short Pump] would give us the greatest chance of success when considering locations. We looked all over at where people congregate and did some market research. There are a lot of people who say they love the Children’s Museum, but that it’s just not convenient enough,” Coltrane said. She notes that upwards of one-third of all museum members live in the West End, but that the museum seeked out ways to reach a greater percentage of the Short Pump area population for some time. “We figured the most cost-effective way to reach West Enders was to come to them.” Museum staff also hope to attract residents of Chesterfield County because of the new location’s close proximity to Route 288.

Coltrane explains the decision to move towards a branch location strategy partially as a creative funding initiative. “We are an institution dedicated to fostering creativity, so it made sense that we use the innovative thinking of our board, staff and volunteers to devise our own creative solution for the museum’s business challenges. We believe a branching model allows the organization to have much more impact throughout our community by generating more resources for our core mission.” Revenue from the new location will also be used to give less fortunate children access to the downtown location.

Henrico County Manager Virgil Hazelett describes the new location as a welcome addition to the area. “We are delighted to have such a highly regarded non-profit organization whose mission is dedicated to early childhood education come into Henrico County,” Hazelett said. “We see the addition of the services provided by the Children’s Museum of Richmond as a great asset to our county.”

The new location will be known as the Children’s Museum of Richmond-Short Pump, while the original location will be called Richmond-Central. The downtown location will continue to operate as normal with all exhibits, camps, and other programs.

The West Broad Village location will be open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and members will have access to both locations at no additional charge. The non-member rate will remain unchanged at $8 for either location

Martin’s Announces Plans To Close & Remodel Ukrop’s Stores In Waves
March 9, 2010 - 8:02 pm
By Trevor Dickerson

Martin’s announced plans Tuesday morning to remodel and renovate all 25 Ukrop’s stores in the Richmond and Williamsburg areas, closing them on a staggered schedule for one week each while signage is changed out, fresh paint is applied and other updates are made.
“Today’s announcement of a significant, multi-million dollar investment in the future of our stores is important news, not only for our customers and 3,600 associates, but for the Greater Richmond community,” said Jim Scanlon, regional vice president of Martin’s. “As a business, we intend to continue our tradition of supporting local suppliers from the painters we’ll need to refresh the stores to the local produce that customers will continue to find.”

The remodeling and refurbishments are expected to be completed at all 25 stores later this spring. In order to lessen the impact on shoppers, the renovation of individual stores will take place in rotations, with a staggered closing of stores for one week while work is completed. During the renovations, pharmacies and in-store banks will remain open to the public.

Tracy Pawelski, Director of Public and Community Relations for Martin’s, says the exact dates of closings will be announced soon, and no more than four stores will be closed at a time. “Stores will close in waves that will enable customers to shop at surrounding stores while their store is under renovation,” Pawelski said. “The extent of the renovations and addition of amenities will vary by store. Stores will feature a more consistent look, very similar to the Short Pump store.”

“This is great news for our community as this investment by Martin’s will pump much needed revenue into the local and regional economy,” Kim Scheeler, President and CEO of the Greater Richmond Chamber said. “Their investment in the infrastructure of these stores and their use of local companies reaffirms their long-term commitment to the community here.”

Representatives of parent company Giant-Carlisle said the investment will be spent on capital upgrades including increased refrigeration, improved lighting, maintenance and repairs, and updated signage and décor packages throughout all of the stores. All 23 cafes will receive new tables and chairs and be wired
for Wi-Fi capability, increasing from eight Wi-Fi cafes today. The extent of the remodels and addition of new amenities will vary by store.

Additional millions will be invested in the installation of customer conveniences including increasing the number of self check-outs per store and adding self check-outs to an additional five stores

Henrico Board Votes To Condemn Properties In North Gayton Road Right-Of-Way

February 24, 2010 - 12:19 am
By Trevor Dickerson

The Henrico County Board of Supervisors voted in favor Tuesday night of beginning the condemnation process for five parcels of land that lie within the right-of-way for the North Gayton Road construction project. The $48 million road project was approved in July of 2009.

Some residents of predominantly rural Kaine and Bacova Roads, which the new road will intersect, fear the Gayton Road extension will bring an end to their quiet way of life, currently tucked away from the rest of the sprawling Short Pump strip malls and other commercial development.

While many property owners have already made or are in the process of reaching agreements with the County of Henrico to sell their properties, officials now have the go-ahead to move forward with court proceedings to acquire the land through condemnation if residents won’t agree on a fair market value for their properties.

The North Gayton Road extension, which will connect West Broad Street to Pouncey Tract Road, is projected to carry 9,600 vehicles when it’s expected to open in 2011. It will be four lanes wide, with room for future expansion of up to six lanes, as traffic is expected to almost double to 18,000 vehicles by 2032.

The project is being designed and built by contractor English Construction, who recently completed the nearby I-295 flyover project. 100% funded by Henrico County, the road project was approved in a 2005 Bond Referendum.

Henrico Judge Freezes Assets Of Short Pump Community Center

February 15, 2010 - 10:37 am
By Pam Hervey

The Henrico County Circuit Court has ordered a temporary freeze on the assets of the Short Pump Community Center until a final determination can be made by the State Corporation Committee on the dissolution status, or upon judgment from a higher jurisdictional court of Virginia. This order is the latest event in the current legal battle that surrounds the potential closing of the center.

“We continue to fight vigorously against the closing of our pool, because our children deserve to have a safe place where friends and families can have fun and swim teams can thrive, just like we have for the last 15 years”, said Rich Rice, former SPCC president and current pool member. ”We anxiously await the SCC’s decision, and hope that they consider all the evidence set before them, including allegations that the established majority of the board had a clear conflict of interest in voting to dissolve the corporation and that members have been denied the right to vote on dissolution”, Rice said.

“Our efforts in the Henrico County Circuit Court were to obtain an injunction based on what we see as pattern of behavior on behalf of the established majority of the board to consistently eliminate the membership from key decision-making processes by circumventing the by-laws of the corporation and not showing up for meetings that needed a board quorum in order to conduct business. We are encouraged that the Circuit Court judge saw the need to help the membership gain legal traction, and hope that the SCC takes this into consideration with their decision.”

Since September 2009, the “Save Our Pool Member Committee”, made up of nine community members spearheading the fight to reverse the dissolution, have attempted to negotiate a fair resolution that would keep the pool open, but these efforts have not been well received by the founding organizations, the Short Pump Ruritan Club and Short Pump Civic Association.

Weekend Garage Fire Heavily Damages Home In Wellesley Subdivision

February 21, 2010 - 1:59 pm
By Trevor Dickerson

A house in the 2800 block of Woodmark Court in the Woodmark subdivision in Wellesley suffered extensive damage after a fire that broke out mid-day on Saturday. Just one of the six residents who occupy the two-story home was inside at the time.

The individual escaped unharmed, but Henrico Fire crews rescued two family dogs from the structure. They appeared to be uninjured, according to witnesses.

Crews swiftly battled the blaze, which started in the attached rear-facing garage of the home around noon, and quickly brought the fire under control. The back of the house, near the garage entrance, sustained the most damage.

Black smoke could be seen towering for miles around the area. Local pilot Brenton Strickler was flying in the area at the time and shot a photo, below, of the blaze from the Cessna he was operating.

Officials say that while the house is not a total loss, it is currently uninhabitable. The residents are reportedly staying with friends while repairs are made.

Henrico Fire officials believe the fire was accidental in nature and are working to determine an exact cause. No foul play currently suspected.

We’ll continue to follow this story as more details emerge.

One Resident Dies In Overnight House Fire Off Sadler Road
March 7, 2010 - 10:37 pm
By Trevor Dickerson

An unidentified resident of a home in the 11000 block of Thorncroft Drive died early Sunday morning when a fire broke out around 2:00 a.m. in a one story brick rancher off Sadler Road near Innsbrook.
Henrico Fire officials arrived on scene to find the home engulfed in flames and consuming the structure. The entire roof was destroyed, leaving only an exterior shell. One resident lost their life in the fire. The victim’s name is being withheld until an autopsy can be completed by a medical examiner.

Authorities say the blaze stated in the kitchen and quickly spread, although the cause has not yet been determined.

Local Company Creates Searchable Online Scholarship Database
March 3, 2010 - 10:12 am
By admin

College-bound high school students and their families can face challenges when searching for information on college scholarships. Athletic and academic scholarships offered by colleges and universities are easy to identify, but sometimes those offered by local business, civic and faith-based organizations aren’t.
An Innsbrook-based company, College Funding Group, has given students and parents an answer to that question. The company has created a comprehensive database of scholarships provided by metro Richmond organizations to local students, and made it available online as the “CFG ScholarBank.”

“We thought that it would be a great community service to share this information on our website,” said Jonathan West, President of College Funding Group. “Our mission is to help students and their parents navigate the college selection process and then paying the right price for that education by exploring all financial options, including scholarships.”

The ScholarBank provides searchable listings with up-to-date information on the contributing organization, student eligibility criteria, scholarship amount, and application deadline. Active scholarships are linked directly to the contributor’s website, or have information on who to contact to apply.

Short Pump Cupcake Bakery Auditions For TV Show On Food Network
March 3, 2010 - 1:50 pm
By Trevor Dickerson

A locally-owned Short Pump cupcake bakery is in the running to be casted in a national television show on Food Network, competing against other cupcake bakeries across America in a show called Cupcake Wars. The owners of Frostings, in the Short Pump Station shopping center near Trader Joe’s, say they’re up for the challenge, should they be chosen.
The show’s producer contacted co-owners Matt Fraker and Jason Ferrell last week and invited them to audition. ”All they would tell us is they were casting for Cupcake Wars and that if we were interested, we should send them a picture of the chef, assistant, one of the store and a couple of our cupcakes,” Ferrell said. They sent these the same day, and received notification that they made it to the next step, which required the filming of a 3-5 minute video (below) highlighting their business.

“The producer was adamant that we use the video to highlight who the chef and assistant (Matt Fraker and Tricia Argoe) are as people. She wanted a glimpse into them, their lives outside of cupcake baking and what kind of charisma they have been working together.” Ferrell said they were less interested in the actual process of baking their cupcakes for this segment. Fraker and Ferrell contacted local video production company Mediapond to put together the video on short notice and sent it to the network.

“Now that we’ve sent them the video, it moves to the next level of producers. We get the sense that they’re casting for multiple episodes.” Ferrell said Frostings will be notified by the end of March if they’ve made the cut to be featured in an episode of Cupcake Wars.

The premise of the show is they recruit four cupcake bakers, each of whom get to bring an assistant, and put them through a series of challenges. In each round, they are given an assortment of secret ingredients and a time limit to bake their creation. There is a panel of judges who evaluate each contestant on creativity, taste and presentation. After each round, someone is voted off. The winner of the show gets $10,000 and their cupcakes featured are featured at a culinary event.

“It’d be unreal to have a chance to compete on Cupcake Wars,” Ferrell added. “We’re very proud of our cupcakes and we know we can go toe-to-toe with any other cupcake bakery in the Country. Bring it on!”

PLEASE LOCK ALL YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS TO YOUR VEHICLES AND HOME. A SIGNIFICANT PERCENTAGE OF LARCENY CRIMES IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD ARE CRIMES OF OPPORTUNITY THAT RESULT FROM UNLOCKED DOORS AND WINDOWS. YOU CAN’T ELIMINATE CRIMINAL INTENT, BUT YOU CAN ELIMINATE CRIMINAL OPPORTUNITY!

PLEASE CHECK YOUR PAPER BOX:
Have you checked your paper box lately? The HOA of your community encourages all residents to check paper boxes to communicate information regarding meetings, notices, community events, as well as for newsletters. Proper paper box maintenance also helps prevents flyers from falling out of overstuffed paper boxes and consequently blowing onto your neighbor’s lawn. THERE IS NO SOLICITING IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD:
If you have a no soliciting policy in your neighborhood, as do Wyndham and Twin Hickory, here is what is suggested as per the Henrico Police:

1. Ask to see his/her business card, business license and driver’s license. Write the name and important information down. If necessary, excuse yourself for a moment and lock your door if you need to go inside and get a pen. NEVER invite solicitors into your home.

2. Politely inform the solicitor that door to door soliciting is not permitted in your neighborhood.

3. If the solicitor refuses or returns, please call the police immediately at 501-5000. Next, call your Association Office and let them know of the incident.

4. Never ignore a knock at your door. If a solicitor turns out to be someone “casing” your home, this could lead him or her to believe that the house is empty.

5. Please keep in mind that because the roads are owned by Henrico County, community association staffs do not have the authority to tell solicitors that they cannot drive on the roads of your subdivision.

PET OWNERS:
Pet Owners……...PLEASE do your part in keeping with Community Standards and the law. Dog waste kills grass, shrubs and neighborhood relationships. Please be a responsible pet owner and clean up after your dogs if your walk them in your neighborhood. Not only is this required by your Neighborhood Association Documents it is also required by county and state codes. Also, if your dog is left outside and barks such that the noise impairs the quality of life of others, it is a violation of the Neighborhood Association Documents and a noise violation within the criminal codes. Please consider others with considerate and lawful pet ownership.

"Sometimes our light goes out but is blown again into flame by an encounter with another human being. Each of us owes the deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this inner light.".......

If you live in one of the many Deep Run Neighborhoods with an HOA and are selling your home you will need to order / purchase a disclosure package. The Property Owners Association Act requires the seller to obtain from the property owners association an association disclosure packet and provide it to the purchaser; the purchaser may cancel the contract within three days after receiving the disclosure packet you purchased for him. When you see what this costs, it will really make you feel ripped off. If the outrageous price isn't enough, dealing with the community group is about as much fun as dropping a barbell on your toe. If you like to talking to voice mail machines, assigned to names that never seem to call you back, then you will love the Community Group.

DO NOT SCHEDULE CONTRACTORS UNTIL MODIFICATIONS APPROVAL HAS BEEN ACCEPTED – It is important not to schedule contractors to begin work on exterior modifications around your home until your neighborhood modifications committee has approved your request and you have received a letter of approval from your community manager.

COMMUNITY WIDE STANDARDS FOR LAWN MAINTENANCE:
Community wide standards been developed to establish the standards for the overall appearance of Wyndham lawns. This is a wonderful standard that will maintain and enhance the values of the homes in our area. No matter how much money and effort you spend on your exterior home and lawn maintenance, if your neighbor maintains their home with a significant indifference towards lawn maintenance standards, it will significantly impair your resale value and ability to efficiently market your home for sale. Accountability for these standards is the key to maintaining an enhanced value for your home. Here are the new standards:

1. Grass should be healthy at all times during the growing months and adequately cared for year round (including regular weed control, fertilization, watering and insect control) in order to maintain healthy, living grass.
2. Grass shall be maintained at a height of no less than 2 inches and no taller than 5 inches.
3. Flower, tree and shrub beds shall not be allowed to present an overgrown and weedy appearance.
4. Trees and shrubs shall be properly pruned to present a neat and manicured appearance.
5. Dead trees and shrubs shall be removed within a timely manner.
6. Leaves and other debris shall be evaluated as viewed from the curb or adjacent property.
7. Conversion of grass from lawn to beds or other non-grass areas requires approval of the Modifications Committee.

The award is the highest honor under the Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) incentive program created by the Board of Education in 2007.

The program was created to advance Governor Kaine’s “competence to excellence” agenda promoting advanced learning and achievement.

To qualify for the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence, schools and school divisions must meet all state and federal achievement benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and achieve applicable excellence goals in various areas.

Colonial Trail Elementary, Echo Lake Elementary, Gayton Elementary, Nuckols Farm Elementary, Pocahontas Middle, Rivers Edge Elementary, Shady Grove Elementary, Short Pump Elementary and Short Pump Middle all received top honors with the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence.

“The school board and I are very proud of our schools and especially those recognized by Governor Kaine and the Virginia Board of Education,” Superintendent Dr. Pat Russo said. “These awards represent the commitment and high expectations we have of reaching the next level of excellence and ensuring a quality education for all of our students.”

Fifteen school divisions and 288 schools earned the 2010 Board of Education Excellence Award, the second-tier honor in the VIP program. These schools and divisions also have met all state and federal accountability benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and have made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the governor and the board.

Deep Run High, Mills E. Godwin High, Springfield Park Elementary and Twin Hickory Elementary received these honors.

Seventeen school divisions and 281 schools earned the 2010 Board of Education Competence to Excellence Award for having met all state and federal benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and are making progress toward the goals of the governor and the board.
